The answer, however, is far less straightforward than drawing a line around the planets and declaring everything beyond it โ€œinterstellar space.โ€ Our solar system exists inside a vast protective region created by the Sun. This region, known as the heliosphere, is shaped by the continuous flow of solar wind and its interaction with the material surrounding our solar system. At its outer reaches, the influence of the Sun encounters the interstellar environment in ways that are complex, dynamic and still being studied. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) gave scientists an entirely new way to investigate this distant frontier. Rather than simply travelling outward toward the boundary, IBEX observed particles arriving from it and used those measurements to create maps of an otherwise invisible region. What IBEX revealed was more than information about where our solar system meets interstellar space. It showed us that our place between the stars is not isolated or static. We exist within an environment that is constantly interacting with the space around us.
